Spectral Lines

The spectral lines of pure iron, shown above, give an idea of the complexity of the task of measuring metal spectra. The precise wavelength for the position of each line had to be measured; furthermore, since some lines are very much fainter than other lines, several exposures of different durations were needed to capture the full range of line brightnesses.
