Arizona Relief Map

Tucson, Arizona, is one of the world capitals for astronomy and this relief map shows why: the city is surrounded by mountains that are easy to access and well suited as locations for large telescopes. In the map below, the location of four major telescopes are labeled: the National Observatory at Kitt Peak, home to more than twenty telescopes; Mt. Hopkins, home to the Harvard-Smithonian MMT telescope and several other astronomical instruments; the Catalina Mountains, home to about half a dozen telescopes of the University of Arizona; and Mt. Graham, the location of the Vatican Advanced Technology Telescope along with the Large Binocular Telescope and Submillimeter Radio Telescope.
