Fr. Johann Hagen S.J.
Fr. John Hagen S.J. (1847-1930) was called to Rome by Pope Pius X in 1906 to be the first Jesuit Director of the Vatican Observatory. He served as Director until his death in 1930. The crater Hagen, 55 km in diameter and located on the far side of the moon, is named for him. He baptized and served as spiritual director of Maria Elizabeth Hesselbad (1870-1957), who was canonized by Pope Francis in 2016.
