Section 4 – Preparing the Samples

The first task in cataloguing the spectra of pure samples was to prepare the samples themselves. Material was obtained from commercial chemical dealers (see tubes and envelopes, above) and then prepared in platinum vessels (right) or on thin quartz disks (below) to ensure that the sample holder did not contaminate the sample itself.
